A design record may reveal a company name, but the named applicant, current rights holder, seller and actual manufacturer must not be treated as the same party by default. This guide addresses how to turn a record into a verifiable company lead. For whether a similar record affects manufacturing or sales, use the separate design-record risk review guide and obtain appropriate professional assessment.
Keep four roles in separate columns
Track the applicant or rights-related party, brand or page operator, quoting company and producer independently. Save the original name, possible English rendering, registration reference, address, source and date. An identical name does not prove identical present operations; different names may reflect affiliates, a licence or historical change. Attach evidence to every proposed connection instead of relying on an automated association label.
Return to the original record for product and time
Save the record number, filing and publication dates, product name, complete views and source link. Compare the depicted version with the item the buyer wants, noting structural differences. For an older record, ask whether the same business still handles the current product. A recent record does not by itself show that bulk production is available.
Look for current evidence along the company trail
Check the company site, public registration and current product catalog. Ask whether it offers the model, manufactures it, performs the critical processes and can provide a recent sample and quote. If the applicant is a design studio or brand, ask how it relates to the producer. If a candidate claims permission to make the item, request an explanation tied to the current product and transaction for appropriate review.
Contact candidates with the same questions
Send each relevant business the same image, target specification and quantity tiers. Ask whether the offer is an existing or modified model, sample timing, key processes, contracting entity and payee. Keep company statements separate from public records, samples and process evidence. If a party will not explain production, repeatedly changes identity or only resends images of the design record, leave the lead unverified rather than calling it the original factory.
Produce a lead record the team can hand over
For every lead, record the design number and dates, applicant, potentially related company, evidence for the relationship, current product evidence, contact, exact response, open questions and next owner. The sourcing team can then investigate manufacturers without collapsing rights, legal identity and capability into one unsupported conclusion.
