Cosmetic Bottle Sourcing: Stock Mold or Custom Tooling?

A fictional beauty-packaging scenario compares formula compatibility, pump output, tooling rights and development costs.

Fictional learning scenario: The brand, candidates and replies are illustrative, not a completed customer project. A brand needs an amber bottle for a new formula, with a stated capacity, repeatable pump dose and acceptable appearance after shipping. A reference image cannot establish formula compatibility or ownership of the bottle shape and decoration.

Put non-negotiable requirements in one brief

The buyer records capacity and tolerance, neck finish, pump dose, materials, color, decoration, expected quantity and destination market. Compatibility work uses the actual formula or a controlled sample from the brand, with agreed time, temperature, observations and acceptance criteria. A picture is an appearance reference; a changed neck, pump or resin needs its own performance evidence.

Compare three development paths

CandidateProposalEvidence still needed
AStock amber bottle and existing pump; fastest start, higher unit quote.Formula compatibility, pump dose, color consistency and supply continuity.
BKeep the stock neck but change decoration and pump.Revision cost, pump fit, abrasion and transit tests.
CNew bottle mold closest to the image, with a lower quoted unit price.Tooling cost, trial rounds, ownership, minimum quantity and exit terms.

C’s unit price cannot be compared without tooling and volume. A’s speed does not replace compatibility testing. The buyer aligns sample counts, decoration criteria, packing and quote inclusions first.

Decision and verification gate

If launch time matters most, A and B proceed to formula-contact and pump testing. C first supplies a phased tooling plan and written rights terms; the buyer does not release a production mold order yet. All samples are checked for leakage, dose, decoration adhesion, neck fit and condition after transit. Findings apply to the tested formula, material and final construction, not automatically to later versions.

Unresolved items

Which fees can be credited against orders? Who owns, stores, maintains and can transfer the mold? Who approves retesting if the formula or pump changes? The output is a proposal comparison, sample issues, compatibility plan, tooling terms and open questions. It does not suggest that FindBao performs formulation tests, purchasing or inspections.
